Lexicon Reader Dayna had the opportunity to interview Justin Lerner(pictured left with Jackson Rathbone), the director of Girlfriend. Here Justin talks about the movie making process, working with Jackson and more. Remember that the movie is currently raising funds for a theatrical release.
I had the pleasure of meeting Writer/Director/ Producer, Justin Lerner at this past year’s Toronto International Film Festival when he took his film GIRLFRIEND starring Twilight’s Jackson Rathbone, Raising Hope’s Shannon Woodward and the extremely talented actor Evan Snieder, who has made his first starring role in a feature length movie, to the festival in September 2010.
When I returned from Tiff there were plenty of movies that came home with me, for a short time. GIRLFRIEND was not one that stuck around for just a short time though. We are now in March, 2011 and it’s been six months since I last sat in the theater to see it.
This Quote from Jane Schoettle, programmer of Toronto International Film Festival sums it up for me and tons of others, “ GIRLFRIEND is warm, sharp, funny, complex… I saw it four months ago and it’s still under my skin.”

I’ve done a post about the experience of working with Evan Sneider, so I thought I might write a bit about working with the other members of the cast of GIRLFRIEND.
When I first came on board the project, I was told that one actor was already attached… that actor was Jackson Rathbone. At the time, to be honest, the name didn’t mean much to me. I hadn’t seen TWILIGHT, nor any of his other work for that matter. I went out that night to rent the first film in the saga.
It didn’t change my perception of him. In fact, it didn’t do much for me at all, really… but then, I’m not the core audience for the film. What I knew of him after watching the film was that he was (possibly) a good looking guy. I say possibly because you can’t really get a sense of him either physically or otherwise by watching the first TWILIGHT film. He comes off as a new-age Johnny Depp. A vampire Edward Scissorhands with frosted tips… still, you’d be crazy not to acknowledge that he has charisma. With maybe only two lines in the first film, I was still intrigued. Anyway, it wouldn’t much matter what I thought either way. He was going to be in the film. I just hoped he could actually act. EXCLUSIVE: In a deal set in motion after the film’s well-received screenings at the Toronto International Film Festival, Hannover House has acquired the North American rights to “Girlfriend,” an indie drama written and directed by Justin Lerner.
The film stars Evan Sneider, an actor with Down syndrome who plays a young man who comes into money and uses it to romance the girl he’s had a crush on since high school. Sneider’s co-stars include Shannon Woodward (“Raising Hope”), Jackson Rathbone (“The Twilight Saga”) and Amanda Plummer.
Hannover House plans to release “Girlfriend” before the end of the year.
Interest in the film picked up after its screenings in the Discovery section of the Toronto festival, particularly two sold-out public screenings that were followed by enthusiastic Q&A sessions involving Lerner, Sneider and other cast members.
