It isn’t the unusual name of 100 Monkeys that makes the funk rock band so unique. It isn’t just that Twilight star Jackson Rathbone is in the band. It isn’t just the fact that all five musicians can switch over to one another’s roles and alternate instruments during performances. It’s the fact that four of the all-American boys are in their 20s, and the fifth member is a black man in his late 50s.

“The age gap is unique, but art has no age, no number, no beginning and no end,” 57-year-old Chicago-born Lawrence Abrams told me. “When I first met them, I saw and felt a lot of myself coming up in them right before my eyes. I may be 25 years their senior, but they have rhythm and soul. They say I bring a lot of wisdom, kindness and patience to their table.”

100 Monkeys on MF Magazine

Coinciding with the “Liquid Zoo” album release, 100 Monkeys kicks off a 40+ city US tour starting in Cincinnati on June 28 and will also include dates in Dallas, Anaheim, Detroit, Chicago, San Francisco and other major cities. The guys were also selected as one of LG’s “One’s to watch” this summer. They promise the biggest and best tour yet and of course the usual surprises along the way that only 100 Monkeys can deliver. The band logged a quick eight day tour over the winter holiday playing to sold out venues in several cities across the southern U.S. and they are more than eager to get back to what they love…playing for their fans.

What was it about the supposed phenomenon, “The Hundredth Monkey Effect” that inspired the name for the band?

We believe that The Hundredth Monkey effect is very real, not just supposed. It’s the way of art to spread through the cultural mind in an exponential way, especially in this modern age of internet and social networking. The population of the world is more connected than it has ever been, and we are very lucky to be living in a time when a simple idea or creation can be spread beyond its community of origin and be appreciated by so many.

100 Monkeys Transcend ‘Twilight,’ Keep the Legacy of Spencer Bell Alive

Tell us a little bit about yourselves.

Ben Graupner: We’re 100 Monkeys, funky rock ‘n’ roll band. Started in the Living Room in Hollywood just behind Cantor’s Deli. We were making these crazy recordings in the Living Room, in there all day making an album a day or two albums a day and we made all our friends listen to it.

Jackson Rathbone: Yeah! Yeah did you like it? Did you like it?!

BG: And then we wrote this album called ‘Monster de Lux’ one day, and we thought there was something in there. So we moved forward on that and at the same time we met Lawrence [Abrams] and Jerad [Anderson] who lived down the block who’d been coming over and jamming all the time. And we had just finished a movie with Lawrence. The producers of that movie had bought a bar up the street.

We kept getting shut down by the police because of noise complaints. So then the people who owned the bar said “Hey you can come up and practice in the bar when it’s not open, we’re closed this Tuesday if you wanna come over and jam.” And we started playing and some people wandered in off the street and the owner was there [and] he started pouring them free drinks. And that turned into a Tuesday residency. That’s how the band got together. We just started playing and playing and playing. Now it’s been almost four years. Toured North America extensively. Can’t wait to get overseas. We’re here promoting our second album ‘Liquid Zoo.’
